Kolkata may experience storms accompanied by rain, with wind speeds reaching 40–50 km/h! Alerts have been issued for four districts in South Bengal; how long is this inclement weather expected to last

A significant volume of moisture-laden air is streaming inland from the Bay of Bengal. Consequently, conditions conducive to storms and rainfall have developed across the entire state. Alerts have been issued for multiple districts spanning both North and South Bengal.

The fury of storms has set in right at the beginning of the month of Chaitra. On Sunday evening, storms swept across several districts of South Bengal. In Kolkata as well, gusty winds have been blowing for the better part of the day. In Bankura, one person died after being crushed under a tin shed during the storm, while four others sustained injuries. Train services on the South-Eastern section were also temporarily disrupted after several trees were uprooted. Meteorologists anticipate that these weather conditions will persist for a few more days.

The Meteorological Department has stated that scattered storms and rainfall are likely to continue across South Bengal—including Kolkata—until next Sunday. Specific alerts have been issued for Monday and Tuesday. On Monday, Kolkata is expected to experience rain accompanied by thunder and lightning, along with gusty winds blowing at speeds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour. The wind speed may decrease slightly on Tuesday. Subsequently, fresh weather alerts have been issued for the city for Saturday and Sunday. A similar forecast applies to the remaining districts of South Bengal. However, the Meteorological Department has issued an 'Orange Alert' for the districts of Hooghly, East Bardhaman, West Bardhaman, and Birbhum. On Monday, these districts are expected to witness rain accompanied by gusty winds ranging from 50 to 60 kilometers per hour; wind speeds could potentially reach up to 70 kilometers per hour. Due to the storms and rainfall, the maximum temperature across South Bengal is expected to drop by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius over the next two days.

Storms and rainfall are also set to continue for the next few days across the districts of North Bengal. Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar may experience rain accompanied by thunder and lightning, along with gusty winds blowing at speeds of 30 to 50 kilometers per hour. Alerts have been issued for these districts for Monday and Tuesday, as well as for the period from Friday through Sunday. For North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, and Malda, weather alerts are in effect for Monday, as well as for Saturday and Sunday.

On Monday, Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 23.2 degrees Celsius—0.6 degrees higher than normal. On Sunday, the city's maximum temperature stood at 30.6 degrees Celsius—3 degrees lower than normal. The Meteorological Department has attributed these conditions to a significant influx of moisture-laden air from the Bay of Bengal into the mainland, thereby creating favorable conditions for storms and rainfall across the entire state.
